By WeddingInKansas Team

This is a shortlist, not a ranking. Each entry states what its own website or public-agency page says today — capacity where a source gives one, indoor/outdoor and weather notes, catering and alcohol rules, accessibility, lodging, and how to inquire. Where a source doesn’t say, this guide labels it unknown rather than guessing. For how KU’s academic calendar can affect Lawrence wedding dates, see the Lawrence wedding planning guide.

Downtown and historic buildings

Union Pacific Depot

The City of Lawrence’s Union Pacific Depot (402 N. 2nd St.) rents its Community Room (24’×73’, 90 seated/150 standing) and Theater Room (12’×28’, 38 seated/45 standing) together as one reservation — the rooms aren’t booked separately. The rate is $90/hour with a 3-hour minimum, including Wi-Fi, a 98” TV with HDMI, and a kitchenette. General setup is free and self-service within your reserved block. The city’s page states no catering, alcohol, or accessibility policy. Reservations: (785) 832-7920.

Ask: Which catering and alcohol rules apply, and whether the building is accessible for your guests.

Carnegie Building

The Carnegie Building (200 W. 9th St.), a former Carnegie library, is rented by the city as one combined reservation — the Heritage Room plus East and West Galleries (32 and 49 capacity each). Renting the full facility runs up to 150 seated or 200 standing. The rate is $100/hour with a 3-hour minimum, including Wi-Fi, a projector, screen and AV setup (no HDMI listed), and a kitchenette with a sink and full-size refrigerator. As with the Depot, the city’s page states no catering, alcohol, or accessibility policy. Reservations: (785) 832-7920.

Ask: Whether outside caterers and alcohol are permitted, and what accessibility accommodations exist.

Community Building

The Community Building (115 W. 11th St.) is a converted 1940 armory now used primarily for recreation and fitness classes. The city’s own description calls it “a popular place for everything from playing basketball to holding a wedding reception,” and notes meeting rooms with kitchenette access. The page doesn’t say which room hosts a reception, what its capacity is, or a wedding-specific rental rate. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; reservations go through (785) 832-7920.

Source: City of Lawrence — Community Building. No directory record exists for this Lawrence facility (a same-named record in the directory is a different building in Liberal, KS).

Ask: Which specific room is used for receptions, its seated capacity, and the rental rate — none of these are published.

Cider Gallery

Cider Gallery (810 Pennsylvania St.) lists weddings among the events it hosts, alongside daytime events, social gatherings and celebrations of life. The site references a “Preferred Caterers” page and an “Event Extras” add-on page. Public hours are Tuesday–Friday, 1–5 p.m., unless privately booked. Contact: (785) 304-4005, or a tour request via Calendly.

The site as checked today doesn’t state capacity, an indoor/outdoor split, alcohol policy, accessibility, or pricing.

Ask: Current seated capacity, whether the patio is covered, and the alcohol/catering policy.

Abe & Jake’s Landing

Abe & Jake’s Landing (8 E. 6th St.) is a former industrial building with a main event space featuring a stage and dance floor, a second space with a fireplace, two private suites, a river-facing patio, and a catering kitchen. The site describes custom bar packages and décor/linen/AV rental add-ons. Booking runs through a “Book A Tour” request on the site.

The site states no capacity figure, no weather-backup plan for the patio, and no accessibility information.

Ask: Seated capacity for your layout, whether the patio has covered backup, and which bar/linen/AV options cost extra.

Venue 1235

Venue 1235 (1235 N. 3rd St.) explicitly lists weddings among its hosted events. The site states up to 300 guests seated for private events — a separate “up to 800” figure applies only to unseated community events, not private/wedding capacity. The main room is 6,000 sq. ft. and climate-controlled, with a covered, heated patio and a fenced yard for outdoor use. Booking: booking@venue1235.com or (785) 856-7800.

The site doesn’t state a catering, alcohol, or accessibility policy, and no pricing is published.

Ask: Seated capacity for your specific layout, catering/alcohol rules, and accessibility features.

Liberty Hall

Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts St.) is a historic Beaux-Arts theater downtown with dedicated “Weddings” and “Private Events” sections in its site navigation, plus a separate accessibility page. Its regular public hours are Thursday–Sunday, 2–9 p.m.; wedding inquiries route through its event partner, Love in Lawrence, at team@loveinlawrence.com, or the venue’s main line, (785) 749-1972. Note: the directory’s listed website (libertyhall.net) now redirects to a different domain, liberty-hall.com.

Neither the homepage nor the wedding-page content reviewed states a capacity, indoor/outdoor layout, catering/alcohol policy, or specific accessibility accommodations.

Ask: Seated capacity, whether the historic auditorium or a separate room hosts receptions, and the catering/alcohol policy.

Campus and university-affiliated

Danforth Chapel

Danforth Chapel, on the KU campus in Lawrence, is a nondenominational chapel dedicated in 1946. The university’s own page says it accommodates “weddings, student organization gatherings, and other special occasions.” The chapel is open to the public Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and groups may use it during those hours only if it stays accessible to the public; a KU building manager must be on-site during any event. Reservations go through the KU Memorial Union Event Services office; the page lists (785) 864-4651 and union@ku.edu — note these differ from the phone and street number in this venue’s existing directory record.

The page states no capacity, no weather-backup option (it’s an indoor-only booking), no catering/alcohol policy, and no accessibility detail.

Ask: Maximum seated capacity, whether any reception space is available nearby, and current accessibility accommodations.

The Jayhawk Club

The Jayhawk Club (1809 Birdie Way) is a private golf and country club with a dedicated “Weddings & Events” section on its site. Reception packages include banquet tables and chairs, china, service-ware and glassware, setup/teardown and cleaning, an on-site event manager, and serving staff and bartenders. Wedding inquiries route to a Special Events Coordinator at (785) 856-2438 or an online form; general contact is (785) 842-2929 or info@thejayhawkclub.com.

The site doesn’t state a guest capacity, an indoor/outdoor split, weather backup, a specific alcohol policy, accessibility information, or pricing.

Countryside

Historic Taylor Barn

Historic Taylor Barn (1827 E. 1150 Rd.) is an 1879 limestone barn marketed as a rustic wedding venue, with outdoor ceremony and reception space shown in its photos. The site states it is “available May–October” and references a preferred-vendor list for other services. Booking is by phone, (785) 550-9332, or a tour request through the site’s contact form.

The site doesn’t state a guest capacity, an indoor weather-backup space, or accessibility details. Pricing sits behind a separate wedding-packages page not reviewed for this article.

Ask: Seated capacity, what happens in the outdoor space if it rains, and current package pricing.

Circle S Ranch & Country Inn

Circle S Ranch & Country Inn (3325 Circle S Ln.) is a family-owned country inn and ranch whose site covers weddings, family reunions and “special events retreats,” with both outdoor and indoor spaces. It’s the only venue in this roundup with on-site inn lodging. Booking: events@circlesranch.com or (785) 843-4124; the site also has a date-availability tool.

The content reviewed doesn’t state a guest capacity, weather-backup plan, or catering/alcohol/accessibility policy. A separate pricing page exists but was not reviewed for this article.

Ask: Seated capacity for the reception space, weather backup for an outdoor ceremony, and current pricing.

Event spaces that do not advertise weddings

These two sites describe event rental, not weddings specifically — neither uses the word “wedding” anywhere. Ask directly before assuming either will host yours.

Douglas County Fairgrounds

Douglas County Fairgrounds (2120 Harper St.) rents its grounds and buildings through an online reservation portal and a county rental office; the page doesn’t name a specific hall, so renters pick a building via the portal or by phone. An alcohol-permit application is available among the rental documents, and decorations may not be taped, stapled, nailed, tacked, or attached with putty or command strips to the walls. A camping map is referenced for overnight guests. Contact: (785) 832-5296 or fairgrounds@dgcoks.gov, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

The page states no capacity, no indoor/outdoor breakdown, and no accessibility information for any specific building.

Source: dgcoks.gov/maintenance/fairgrounds-information.

Ask: Which building fits your guest count and layout, its capacity, and whether it has climate control.

Lawrence Arts Center

Lawrence Arts Center (940 New Hampshire St.) lists “private receptions or events” on its event-rentals page. Stated room capacities: Main Lobby and Main Theatre up to 300 each, Large Gallery 100, Black Box Theatre 90, Lower Lobby 75, Middle Gallery 50, and Studio A (at the separate 10th & Mass Studios location) 70. Renters need a cash-bar catering license to serve alcohol; restrictions and sales tax apply. The site states “all areas are accessible to persons with disabilities” and recommends booking at least six months ahead.

Source: lawrenceartscenter.org and its event-rentals page.

Ask: Whether the space can be booked for a wedding ceremony or reception, and the catering/alcohol restrictions in detail.
