The Kay McFarland Japanese Garden at Topeka Zoo combines traditional Japanese design elements with Kansas landscape features, creating a serene, curated space for contemplation and cultural exploration. The garden incorporates authentic architectural features including a crane gate entrance (built without screws in traditional Japanese fashion), a five-story pagoda representing earth, fire, water, wind, and space, an eight-plank bridge with historical significance, koi ponds, stone lanterns, and a traditional tea house. The space also features botanical collections including an iris garden and All-America Selections Display area, reflecting the marriage of horticultural education and Japanese aesthetic principles.

Accessed through the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center, the garden offers guided and self-guided tours year-round, with free admission and extended hours from dawn to 10 p.m. The distinctive landscape serves both as a public garden for community enjoyment and as a rental venue space available for private celebrations.
