Culinaria got its start in 2009 as a catering company founded by longtime Lawrence residents Aaron Pillar and Regan Lehman Pillar, before growing into a weekend restaurant in the fall of 2017. The business occupies one of east Lawrence’s most historic buildings, at the corner of 9th and New Jersey — a structure originally built as a barn and carriage house for the Kansas Cavalry after the 1863 Lawrence Massacre, and later home to a butcher shop, a slaughterhouse, and even a Volkswagen mechanic before Culinaria moved in.

Since reopening in April 2021, Culinaria has served made-from-scratch, Mediterranean-inspired dishes alongside a thoughtfully curated wine list and a mix of classic and craft cocktails, with seating available indoors or on a large outdoor patio when weather allows. The restaurant also offers takeout and gift certificates for those who want to share the experience.
