Wedding Cake Tastings: How to Choose Your Baker

By WeddingInKansas Team

A tasting is most useful when you arrive with the decisions that affect the quote: guest count, the number of servings needed, a display-cake idea, flavors, dietary requests, venue, and delivery window. Taste for the final dessert plan, not only for a favorite sample.

Compare flavor and logistics together

Ask how the baker defines a serving, whether the display tiers serve all guests, and how additional kitchen cake, cupcakes, or other desserts are priced. Bring the venue’s delivery and setup rules, including whether the cake needs to arrive before the room is finished or whether a stand must be supplied.

Take the Cake in Leawood lists round tiered cakes from $6.50 per serving, square tiers from $7.50 per serving, mousse filling from $0.30 per serving, and Kansas City metro delivery from $50–$75. It says a 10% deposit guarantees the event date. Those are starting figures, so use the tasting to confirm the actual tier size, filling, design, delivery location, tax, and final total.

Artistic Cakes lists a $15 consultation credited toward the purchase if booked. Its Wichita page describes wedding cakes as custom and lists delivery from $75 Monday–Saturday or $95 Sunday inside 30 miles, plus $2 per mile beyond. It does not publish a wedding per-serving rate, so ask for that piece in the proposal rather than inferring it from another bakery.

Leave with a usable proposal

Ask the baker to write down the final servings, flavors by tier, design elements, dietary requests, delivery/setup, stand or rental needs, deposit, payment deadline, and change deadline. Ask what they will do if a requested design element or flower is unavailable. Confirm whether cutting service is part of the venue or catering plan.

The published provider details were retrieved September 13, 2026. Confirm a current written quote and date availability directly with the bakery.
