Name Change After Marriage in Kansas: Records Checklist

By WeddingInKansas Team

If you choose to change your name, check the requirements of each agency before submitting documents. A wedding announcement does not update government records.

Obtain the right marriage record

Use KDHE’s marriage-certificate instructions for certified copies. KDHE currently lists a $20 base charge per certified copy, with additional fees for some ordering methods. Check current processing times before booking appointments.

Update Social Security before your Kansas credential

The Kansas Division of Vehicles says to update your name with the Social Security Administration at least 24 hours before changing your Kansas credential. Its checklist calls for your Kansas credential, residential-address mail and a legal name-change document. It does not accept a duplicate marriage license or ceremonial church certificate as the marriage document.

Track other records separately

Make a list of employers, banks, insurance policies, professional licenses and travel documents you want to update. Check each organization’s accepted evidence and submission method. Keep a record of what you submitted and when; avoid sending your only certified copy without understanding the return process.

For imminent travel, check the carrier’s name-matching requirements before changing reservations. This page is an administrative checklist, not a determination of which name changes your documents legally support.
