Kansas Marriage License: Application and Ceremony Checklist

By WeddingInKansas Team

Start with the Kansas Judicial Branch application. Applying for a license and arranging a ceremony are separate steps.

Application and timing

The 8th Judicial District directs applicants to the online system. It lists a $85.50 license fee, plus $2.14 for card payment or $1.25 for electronic check. Check the amount displayed before paying. Have an email address, the requested personal information for both applicants and an online payment method ready.

There is a three-day waiting period, but processing can take up to two weeks. The issued license lasts six months and can be used for a ceremony anywhere in Kansas. Return the completed license to the issuing court within ten days after the ceremony.

Witnesses and officiant

For a ceremony with an authorized officiant, K.S.A. 23-2504 requires at least two competent witnesses over 18, separate from the officiant. Our earlier statement that witnesses were only recommended was incorrect. See the officiant guide for authorized roles and the statute’s separate religious-custom provision.

Eligibility questions

Applicants under 18 should obtain guidance from the court about the specific consent and judicial requirements in K.S.A. 23-2505. The previous blanket statement about anyone under 16 was inaccurate. Ask the court about eligibility questions before making nonrefundable arrangements.

After the wedding

Check names and ceremony details before returning the paperwork. KDHE handles certified marriage certificates after the court forwards the record. A ceremonial keepsake is not a certified copy.

Keep your application confirmation, court instructions and ceremony arrangements together. This checklist summarizes public information; the issuing court handles your application and individual questions.
