Alcohol at Kansas Weddings: Questions for Your Venue and Caterer

By WeddingInKansas Team

Ask who is legally responsible for supplying, selling and serving alcohol before signing a reception contract. The answer depends on the premises and service arrangement; there is no single permit checklist that fits every wedding.

The Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control on-premise license guide distinguishes drinking establishments, caterers and other license types. Its caterer handbook explains catered-event rules and county restrictions. An alcohol caterer license is different from simply providing food.

Put these questions in writing

  • Which business supplies the alcohol, and which license or permit covers service at this address?
  • Are guests paying individually, or is the host paying under a contract?
  • Are outside alcohol, corkage and leftover removal permitted?
  • Who checks identification, controls service and handles cleanup?
  • What hours, premises boundaries and venue insurance requirements apply?

Ask the venue and licensed provider to explain your specific arrangement. Resolve licensing questions with Kansas ABC before purchasing alcohol or advertising a cash bar. Do not assume a free bar or a private invitation removes every requirement.

For the rest of the reception, compare written catering proposals and list beverage charges separately from food, staffing and rentals.
